This is how the story begins and pretty much describes the heartless old rancher who mistreats his wife and twin daughters, forcing them to do his work while he pursues his more favored activities, drinking and whoring. As is the case with most selfish bullies, his cruelty and neglect, in the end, does not bode well for him.
